No more cut-offs from Next Year, Delhi University to admit students based on entrance exams

From next year, students applying to Delhi University (DU) will not have to worry about missing out on their favourite institution owing to high cut-offs. Instead, admission tests will be used to assess their eligibility.

The decision comes after students were outraged after cut-offs for over 11 courses in seven DU campuses reached 100% earlier this year. DU convened a nine-member council in November to recommend an "alternative model for optimum undergraduate course admissions."

“A statutory decision-making body that helps with implementation of policies and measures — approved the decision of conducting entrance exam-based admissions Friday. This means the central university will do away with the system of cut-offs from the academic year 2022” – said by DU’s Executive Committee (EC).

It is still unclear if DU would create its own entrance examinations or use the national government's Central University Common Entrance Test (CUCET).
The university's Academic Council — its highest academic authority, responsible for maintaining standards of instruction, education, and testing — accepted the plan to hold admission tests on December 10th. However, 16 council members had voted against the decision.

“As of now, the decision that entrance exams will be conducted next year onwards has been taken. How these exams will be conducted and which exam will it be are modalities that are being worked out,” DU Registrar Vikas Gupta told to media group.

The panel, chaired by the university's vice-chancellor, Yogesh Singh, suggested three options: giving admission on the basis of entrance tests beginning next year, with 50% of marks from Class 12 exams and 50% from an entrance test, or continuing the status quo (keeping the cut-off system as it is). The possibility of holding admission tests has been granted by the EC.
