Common University Entrance Test (CUET) to be conducted for UG admissions to central universities. Class 12 marks will not be considered for admissions.

UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar announced on Monday that the first-ever mandatory common entrance test for admission to undergraduate programmes in all 45 Central universities will be held in the first week of July.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) will announce the test pattern on Tuesday, he said. The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) is a computerized exam that will be administered by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) will be conducted on 7th July 2022 for the first time. The examination application window will open in the first week of April.

According to Kumar, admission to undergraduate courses in these universities will now be solely based on the CUET score, with Class 12 Board marks having no bearing. At best, universities can use the results of the Board exam as a test eligibility criterion.

The above effectively means that even a student's performance on the Class 12 Board exam will no longer be considered when applying to Central universities

To put it another way, Delhi University's sky-high cut-off marks are now history. Seven DU colleges have requested 100% marks in the first list to admit students to a total of ten programmes this year.

Because of the "diversity" in evaluation methods, the government did not favour using Board scores for admission.

"Some boards are more generous with marking than others, giving their students an unfair advantage over others," said an official who requested anonymity.

There will be no common counselling after the CUET, and each university will admit students based on a merit list prepared by NTA.

CUET will now cover Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Jamia Millia Islamia, and Indira Gandhi National Open University in the national capital, as well as Aligarh Muslim University and Banaras Hindu University in Uttar Pradesh.

When asked if Central universities that reserve seats for minorities, such as AMU and Jamia, will be required to use CUET, Kumar clarified that the test is mandatory for all 45 UGC-funded Central universities. He went on to say that while CUET will not affect reserved seat quotas at such institutions, they will be required to admit all students through the common test.

"The only thing that is different is that these students, like students admitted on general seats, will have to go through CUET." The university's reservation policies and ordinances will remain unchanged, according to the UGC chairperson.

AMU and Jamia have yet to clarify their positions on taking the entrance exam.

Students will be penalised for incorrect answers on the CUET, which will include multiple choice questions based on NCERT textbooks. There will be three sections to the entrance exam (see box). Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Urdu, Assamese, Bengali, Punjabi, Odia, and English will be offered in the CUET 2022.

The CUET exam will be conducted in two shifts. Candidates will appear for Section I (languages), two chosen domain subjects, and the general test in the first shift. They will appear for the remaining four domain subjects and, if desired, an additional language test in the second shift.

International students are not required to take the CUET; their admissions will be handled on a supernumerary basis.
