After alloting high level of autonomy to  Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is expected to get complete autonomy soon. As per reports in dnaindia.com the government is considering giving more autonomy to the premier technical institutes in terms of deciding their fee structure and appointments.

However, the kind of autonomy that could be granted to the IITs would be different from that granted to the IIMs, considering the varied nature of the institutes i.e. the IIMs are postgraduate institutes while the IITs are largely for undergraduates students.

Soon, IIMs will award degrees instead of diplomas. The Union Cabinet approved IIM Bill that has granted it statutory powers.

Present Autonomy Situation:

  • IITs in general are independent institutions, but they are mostly depend on IIT Council and HRD Ministry on various operational aspects.
  • These don't have autonomy to decide their respective fee structures.
  • IITs have no role in the appointment of their respective directors.
  • Only the HRD Ministry and IIT Council have the authority to deal with the appointment of directors and deciding fee structure.

The situation has been becoming difficult for both the ministry and the IITs. Therefore, the ministry is in plans to provide complete autonomy to IITs. During a recent IIT council meet, chaired by Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar, demand for autonomy was unanimously supported by the 23 IITs. The minister has personally given a nod to the proposal.

Soon, IIMs will award degrees instead of diplomas. The Union Cabinet approved IIM Bill that has granted it statutory powers.

The centre is planning to give more autonomy to top performing institutes in India. The government also framed out certain guidelines to grant autonomy to higher educational institutes.
