All about Commerce as a Career


Your love for numbers can lead you to the commerce as a career option. Finance, Accountancy, Economics, Statistics are some areas which could be your destination after opting the commerce as a career. After completing 10+2 in commerce, there is much to explore in the area of economy, finance, Data Management, Business Management, etc. 

There are two ways to go for commerce as subject, i.e. with or without mathematics. However, there is no dearth of careers in both the ways.

After 10+2 in commerce, the courses which can be opted with or without mathematic, are:

These all are graduation level courses which  to the specific career in  the chosen field:

  1. B.Com:  Bachelor of Commerce: The graduate level degree course for the commerce students which further pave the roads in the expertise of the field.
  2. BBA / BBM:   Bachelors of Administration/Management: A graduate level degree course to get the entry into the management field.             `
  3. BCA: Bachelors of Computer Applications: Giving the pavement to the world of computers and software applications.
  4. NDA :(For Indian Army only): You can apply for NDA exams for Army (as Physics and Maths are necessary for other two departments i.e. Navy and Air-Force)
  5. LLB:  You can go for Law as a career option. You can opt for Bachelor of laws to go into a legal career.

  1. ICAI –  Charted Accountant
  2. ICWA – Institute of Cost and Work Accountancy
  3. BBM/ BBA- This comes under professional course as well so if you want to opt for management in postgraduate, you can go for it in graduation as well.
  4. Courses which require mathematics at 10+2:
  5. Actuarial Science: This field is related to Finance, Data-science, Insurance analysis of the companies.
  6. BAF (Bachelors of Accounting & finance): Specialist course in Accounting and Finance.

10+2 with English and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.

Candidates must have secured at least 55% marks in class 12 board exams.

These courses are not directly related to commerce but have a great scope in the field of business and financial management.
B.Com (Pass) 3 years

10+2 with any stream

Cut-offs for this course might range from 80% to 95% depending on the university/ college.
B.Com (Pass) is a good option if you were not able to secure good marks in class 12 board exams and want to pursue an UG commerce programme. The course focuses on an overview of the field of commerce.
B.A. Economics 3 years

10+2 with any stream

Candidates must have studied Mathematics, Economics and Accounts (for some colleges)
This programme covers all the basic concepts of economics to prepare you for higher studies in the field. Doing an MBA in Finance of M.A in Economics can be a great option thereafter.
B.A Hons (English) 3 years

10+2 with any stream with English as a compulsory subject.

Many institutes may conduct their own entrance exam for admission to this course.
English being a versatile subject can be very beneficial if you want jobs in the media, entertainment as well as teaching sector.
Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) 3 years

10+2 with any stream with Mathematics and English as compulsory subjects.

Candidates must have secured a minimum of 50% marks in 10+2.
BBA can be a very beneficial programme for business and management aspirants. You can strengthen your qualification by pursuing MBA after completing the programme.
Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) 3 years

10+2 with any stream.

Minimum 50%. Aggregate in class 12 board exams.

Institutes may also conduct entrance exams for admission to this course.
A BCA degree will enable you to enter the IT world and pursue high-paying jobs in consulting as well as Information Technology domains.
Bachelor's in Accounting and Finance (BAF) 3 years

10+2 with minimum 50% marks in any of the streams.

Students must have studied Accounts and Finance in Class 12.
BAF is a programme that focuses on subjects like tax, auditing, cost accounting, business law, and economics. The course offers great scope in the finance and accounting fields.
Bachelor's of Financial Markets (BFM) 3 years

10+2 with any stream.

Candidates who have studied Mathematics and economics are given a higher preference.
If you are interested in the stock market then this is the course that you must pursue. The course focuses on subjects like debt markets, risk management, equity markets, microeconomics, mutual funds, investment and security markets.
Bachelors in Banking and Insurance (BBI) 3 years 10+2 with minimum 50% marks in any of the streams. Banking and finance aspirants can pursue this course. An MBA in Finance after this course can improve employability chances.
Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India (ICWAI) Depends on examinations Students from all streams can apply after passing 10+2. The institute being a professional account body checks your proficiency through various examinations in the field of cost accountancy. The certificates provided by the institute opens up great opportunities in the accounting management domain.
B.Sc (H) Statistics/ B.Stat (Hons) 3 years

Students must have passed 10+2 with at least 50% marks.

Students must have studied Mathematics till class 12.
This is yet another course that can prove to be beneficial if you aspire to work in the stock market.
CS (Company Secretary) 2 years and one month

10+2 with any stream.

Foundation Program for Company Secretary.
Company Secretary can be a great opportunity to work in the corporate environments. You will have to clear the exams conducted by the organising authority.
Mass Communication/ Journalism

Certificate: 6 months or 1 year

Diploma: 2 years

Degree: 3 years

10+2 with any stream.

Candidates must have studied English till class 12.
This is a great course if you want to enter the entertainment media or advertising world. There are great opportunities in creative agencies, news agencies, etc. after pursuing this course.
Language Courses

Diploma: 2 years

Degree: 3 years
10+2 with any stream and English as a compulsory subject. French, German, Chinese and Spanish are some of the popular languages that you can pursue. These languages also offer some bright opportunities overseas.
