In order of challenges by The Medical Council of India (MCI) and the central government in 2013 for common entrance test for medical courses now allowed to conduct  National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) on monday, 11th April 2016. NEET is a common entrance test for admission in any medical under graduate and post graduate courses like MBBS,BDS and MD/MS etc. in government or private medical colleges in India. NEET is replaced by All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT).

In 2013, the apex court had to suppress the notification for the single common entrance test(CET) on the basis of that it violated  the rights of private institutions to administer such institutions which provide admissions for different medical UG and PG courses. Justice Dave had in 2013 dissented from the other two judges, then Chief Justice Altamas Kabir and Justice Vikramjit Sen, who by a 2-1 majority opinion to suppress the notification for NEET.

First time it was conducted on 5th may 2013 for under graduate medical courses and during 23 November – 6 December 2012 post-graduate medical courses was conducted. The reason behind the cancellation of NEET was that the common entrance is not within an area influence of MCI. Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and some states along with private colleges had filled 115 petitions in the Supreme Court against it.

Syllabus:

1. The Medical Council of India (MCI) announced the syllabus for the NEET-UG in 2011.
2. The syllabus had been initially published as a draft to invite feedback from other stakeholders.
3. The syllabus for NEET-PG is the same as that of the MBBS course described in the MCI Regulations concerning Graduate Medical Education, 1997.
4. The multiple-choice questions (MCQs) will be based on the MBBS syllabus, as will the knowledge that needs to be acquired during the internship period, which is also described in said Regulations.
5. The distribution of questions, model questions and method of tie breaking for ranking have been placed on the website, as well as in the Prospectus.
