The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a computer adaptive test (CAT) conducted by Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) to assess certain analytical, writing, quantitative, verbal, and reading skills in written English for use in admission to a graduate management program, such as an MBA. The aspirants can be taken GMAT up to five times a year and administered in standardized test centers in 114 countries around the world.

Graduate Management Admission Council has registered GMAT as their trademark and more than 7,000 programs are offered at approximately 2,300 graduate business schools around the world and accept the GMAT score as part of the selection criteria for their programs. The GMAT score accepting institutes offers graduate management programs, including MBA, Master of Accountancy, Master of Finance programs and others.

Registration Process for GMAT

Admissions deadlines for graduate business programs are varied and will be decided on the basis of institutions. Check with the B-schools you are interested in attending and set up your GMAT exam ahead of time to ensure your scores are reported prior to application deadlines.

Eligibility for GMAT

There are not any official eligibility criteria for GMAT provided by GMAC but candidates should have completed their bachelor’s degree. Those undergraduate students who are about to graduate they can also apply. Fluency in English mandatory for the GMAT aspirants.

Exam Pattern of GMAT

The examination is entirely computer-based, scored on a maximum of 800 and consists of four sections named as analytical writing assessment, integrated reasoning section, quantitative section and verbal section. The test duration will be of 3 Hrs. and 7 min. The section-wise question and allotted time distribution are given below:

On July 11, 2017, the GMAC announced that from now on the order in which the different parts of the GMAT are taken can be chosen at the beginning of the exam.

Three options will be available at the test center:

1. Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative, Verbal (original order)
2. Verbal, Quantitative, Integrated Reasoning, Analytical Writing Assessment
3. Quantitative, Verbal, Integrated Reasoning, Analytical Writing Assessment

From the April 2018, the GMAC officially shortened the test by a half hour in which shortening the verbal and quant sections from 75 minutes each to 65 and 62 minutes respectively, and shortening some of the instruction screens as well.

Scoring scale for the GMAT

1. Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) section grades are from 0-6 in 0.5 increments, the details regarding grades are given below:

2. Integrated Reasoning (IR) section is scored on a scale of 1-8 in 1 point increments.
3. Quantitative section scores can range from 6 to 51 (known as scaled score) in 1 point increments.
4. Verbal section scores can range from 6 to 51 (known as scaled score) in 1 point increments.
5. The GMAT total score can range from 200 to 800 in 10 point increments (e.g. 540, 550, 560, 570, etc.).
