All About TOEFL


Test of English as a Foreign Language (abbreviated as TOEFL) is a standardized test conducted by Educational Testing Service (ETS) to measures students’ ability to use and understand English at the university level recognized by more than 10,000 colleges, universities and agencies in more than 130 countries, including Australia, Canada, the U.K. and the United States. The test evaluates how well students combine their reading, listening, speaking and writing skills to perform academic tasks. Educational Testing Service (ETS) is a private non-profit organization, which designs and administers the tests.

TOEFL was first time conducted in 1964. GRE also conducted by ETS. ETS also provide official score reports, sent independently to institutions, for two years following the test. The exam can be taken in an internet-based test (iBT), online, as well as a paper-based test (PDT), offline. TOEFL is a trademark of the Educational Testing Service and candidates can appear for 50 times in a year within the gap of 12 day period and the scorecard will be valid for the 2 years after the test date.

Eligibility Criteria for TOEFL

There are no such eligibility criteria set by the “Educational Testing Service (ETS)” for the TOEFL. Those who are intended for non-native English speakers they can apply for the examination.

TOEFL Exam Pattern

The TOEFL exam is conducted in two modes online (iBT) as well as offline (PDT) and exam pattern will be different for each mode. However, the sections in both modes are almost same except one section. We are providing the detailed exam pattern for both the modes which are given in tabular form below:

The TOEFL Paper Deliver Test is an official test for use where the unavailability of internet test, usually due to internet & computer issues in those locations/areas.

Scoring Scale for TOEFL

Scoring scale is different for both the tests, the TOEFL iBT test is scored on a scale of 0 to 120 points with 1 point increment and PBT score ranges between 310 and 677.

Scoring Scale for TOEFL iBT:

The TOEFL iBT test is scored on a scale of 0 to 120 points with 1 point increment.

  1. Reading Section score can range on a score scale of 0-30 with 1 point increment.
  2. Listening Section score can range on a score scale of 0-30 with 1 point increment.
  3. Writing Section score can range on a score scale of 0-30 with 1 point increment.
  4. Speaking Section score can range on a score scale of 0-30 with 1 point increment.
  5. Each speaking question is initially given a score of 0 to 4 similarly; each writing question is initially given a score of 0 to 5. These scores are converted to scaled scores of 0 to 30.

Scoring Scale for TOEFL PDT:

  1. Listening Section score can range on a score scale of 31–68.
  2. Structure Section score can range on a score scale of 31–68
  3. Reading Section score can range on a score scale of 31–67.
  4. Test of Written English (TWE) is not part of the final score; instead, it is reported separately on a scale of 0–6.

Registration Process for TOEFL

  1. Candidates can do their TOEFL registration in three ways; register online, register by phone or register by Email.
  2. While doing registration, be ensure to review important information about the name you use when registering, including what to do if you have a name change.
  3. Choose the test center for the computer-delivered test or paper-delivered test by signing into your TOEFL account.
  4. Registration closes 7 days before the scheduled test date an late registration closes 4 days before the test date with a late fee of US$40.
  5. Candidates have to bring valid and acceptable ID Card on test day, and they must ensure that the first and last name used when created their account and registered for the test should be the same.

If you do not follow proper registration procedures and/or fail to present the required ID document(s) at the test center or once you are admitted to the test center, you are not eligible for any refund.
