IIM Lucknow to stop providing support to IIM Sirmaur

Indian Institute of Management is counted as a premier institute in India and these institutes have directors to manage the institute. After 2015, 7 new IIMs were established in India, but these IIMs does not have any regular director to govern its management. So these IIMs are mentored by the old IIMs. The HRD Ministry appointed heads to the institutes in Nagpur, Sambalpur, Sirmaur, Bodhgaya and Vishakhapatnam in February 2017. The IIMs in Jammu and Amritsar are still being mentored by IIM-Lucknow and IIM-Kozhikode, respectively.

IIM Lucknow is the only IIM which mentors 2 IIMs. Once a regular director is appointed at IIM, the mentor IIM hands over its control to the new director. But still, it provides academic support to the institutes. Presently, 60 percent of faculty at IIM-Sirmaur is provided by IIM Lucknow, which is becoming a very hectic for IIM Lucknow faculties.

“My faculty are already strained. We can’t do both (support IIM-Jammu and IIM-Sirmaur). I have a limited number of faculty members, about 71 or 72 teachers. They have to teach in Lucknow, Noida (off-campus centre), Sirmaur and Jammu,” said by IIM-Lucknow director Ajit Prasad.

“I had told Sirmaur in April last year that we will not be able to carry this (academic support) on for long. So, I advised Neelu (Rohmetra), the director, that she should develop relationship with (IIM) Rohtak, (IIM) Kashipur, (IIM) Amritsar and Chandigarh B-schools. At some point of time, we have to stop the support,” added by IIM-Lucknow director Ajit Prasad.

IIM Sirmaur director Neelu Rohmetra has already asked other B-schools to provide academic support. IIM Lucknow’s decision of withdrawing support from IIM-Sirmaur came as an unpleasant news for IIM-Siramur so Neelu Rohmetra has requested the government to convince IIM-Lucknow to reverse its decision to withdraw academic support from the institute.

“I have reported the matter to the ministry and requested them to take this up (with IIM Lucknow),” . She added, “IIM Sirmaur’s DPR (detailed project report) states that the mentor institute’s support can extend up to the year 2021. I’m not sure if they can pull out this way,” said by IIM Sirmaur director Neelu Rohmetra .

When asked the commitment made to IIM Sirmaur in the DPR IIM Lucknow director Ajit Prasad said, “I don’t think so. I haven’t seen this in the DPR and the DPR was made by EdCIL (Educational Consultants India). I don’t think that’s the ministry’s viewpoint.”

The HRD ministry has yet to reach heads of both the IIMs to come to a conclusion.
