Indian Institute of Technology, Dhanbad was formerly known as Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad is a multi-disciplinary institute catering to a wide range of technology and scientific disciplines and is considered among the best engineering institutes in the country. It was offered the tag of reputed "IIT" in the year 2000 (before IIT Roorkee), but due to some administration issues, it could not become an IIT and finally on 25 May 2016, the Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved that a bill be introduced in Parliament for converting ISM Dhanbad into an IIT. The Rajya Sabha unanimously passed the Bill on 2 August 2016. ISM alumni have held key positions in the biggest of the companies in India like SAIL, CIL, ONGC, NTPC, Reliance Industries Ltd, UCIL, etc. and comparatively newer streams like Electronics, Electrical, Computer Science, etc. have also made their mark in the country. ISM is rapidly improving its position among the top engineering colleges in India. It has been ranked as one of the top 12 Engineering colleges in India by the Outlook India 2010 survey.
