The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has set up a Department of Design, which will provide full-time Graduate, Masters and Ph.D. courses from the session 2019-20. From this year, it will provide minor programme in designing. The department is built to bring technology closer to aesthetics and ergonomics.
“Design is one of the fastest growing fields and it is important in every aspect of technology. The look and feel is as important as technology used in a product,” said by V Ramgopal Rao, director of IIT-D
He also added that design is not an abstract exercise as it is instrumental in making the end product presentable.
From this year the department will provide only minor courses, which any of the IIT-Delhi students can opt for. He said, “This year, we are starting a minor programme for all students studying in IIT-D. Anyone can opt for this course as the design is important in all fields of engineering,”.
This will be the only institute, apart from IISc in Bangalore, to offer research in instrument technology. It is also responsible for developing the controlling mechanism of the T72 tank, and modification of electronic voting machines.
