Thapar University, earlier known as Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, was founded in 1956 by Karam Chand Thapar and is situated in Patiala. The University Grants Commision (UGC) granted it full autonomy and the status of a university in the year 1985. It was Ranked 5th according to the CSR-GHRDC Engineering Colleges Survey 2011. The Alumni of Thapar University, known as Thaparians, hold significant positions in corporate world both at Indian and foreign firms. Many of them are CEOs, MDs, CFOs in multinational firms and also hold significant position in the top government posts.
Today , Thapar University is considered as the top private engineering institutions of the country. National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has accredited Thapar University with 'A Grade'. On 24 November 2014, Thapar University signed an agreement with Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland to impart global standard education at its campus in Patiala. Thapar University provides number of courses like Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) , Master of Engineering (M.E.), Master of Software Engineering, Master of Technology (M.Tech.), Master of Science (M.Sc.), Master of Computer Applications (M.C.A.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), and Doctor of Science (D.Sc.). Students need to clear JEE MAINS exam to get admission in Thapar University.
Thapar University has good hostel and internet facilities for the students. It also focuses on techno-cultural events that are organised every year in the college campus. CINEYOUTH and SATURNALIA are the annual cultural events while ARANYA is the technical event hosted by the Thapar University annually.
