The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) earlier known as Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC), is a public engineering university at Surathkal, on the outskirts of Mangalore. It was founded in the year 1960 and today it is one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology in India. The motto of NITK is " ಕಾಯಕವೇ ಕೈಲಾಸ " which is in Kannada language meaning " तत्पूजा कर्मचाखिलम " in Sanskrit while " Work is worship " in the English language. It is a top Engineering and Science Institute in the State of Karnataka. It is ranked 22 in the country, according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) engineering rankings. NITK Surathkal offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Engineering, Science and Management.
The admissions in the undergraduate course (B.Tech) are done through the JEE MAINS examination while in the postgraduate course (M.Tech) through the GATE Examinations conducted by the IITs and IISc. NITK also offers MCA(Master of Computer Application) course for graduate students in which admission is done on the based on NIMCET (NIT MCA Common Entrance Test). NITK from 2003 is offering Doctor of Philosophy Ph.D program for Mtech and other post graduate students.
ENGINEER is the annual technical fest while INCIDENT is the main cultural event of NITK Surathkal. NITK hosted its first TEDx conference during Engineer 2011, and many influential speakers of the region were invited to talk on socially relevant issues. Other than this there are many technical and cultural clubs that are organized by the scholars of NITK Surathkal. Sports facilities include the cricket ground, tennis lawns, badminton and table tennis complex, the basketball and volleyball courts along with a swimming pool.
