Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (also known as IIT Gandhinagar and IITGN), is a public institute of higher education located in Gandhinagar, Gujarat,India, declared to be an Institute of National Importance by the India.In 2008 the Ministry of Human Resource Development announced IIT Gandhinagar is one of the eight new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) .
The institute is located in Palaj, Gandhinagar, Gujarat on the banks of river Sabarmati spreading in as area of 400 acres. Initially, the Institute began operating in a temporary campus at Vishwakarma Government Engineering College, Chandkheda, which was mentored by Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. The first batch of students was admitted in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering.Admission to the B.Tech programs is taken through IIT Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Electrical Engineering.
The MSc program is also offered in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Cognitive Science, MA program in Society and Culture and Ph.D. programs are offered in all the science and engineering disciplines. As far as the motto is concerned, IIT Gandhinagar does not have any official motto. In April 2016, IIT Gandhinagar was ranked 8th by the National Institutional Ranking Framework, which is published by the Ministry of Human Resource Development
