The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB or IIT-Bombay) is a public engineering and research institution, which is located in Powai, Mumbai, India. Founded in 1958, it is the second-oldest (after Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur). As per QS World University Rankings 2014, IIT Bombay was ranked as India’s top university.
Planning for IIT Bombay began in 1957, while the first batch of 100 students was admitted in 1958.The campus includes more than 584 Major Buildings with an area of 550 Acres or around 2.22 square KM. Its comprehensive graduate program offers Doctoral Degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. At present, IIT Bombay has a total of 14 Academic Departments, six centers, one school, and three interdisciplinary programs. Over the span of last 53 years, around 39,000 Engineers and Scientists have graduated from IITB.
The motto of IIT Bombay is "ज्ञानं परमं ध्येयम्" which means "Knowledge is the Supreme Goal". The annual Science & Technology festival of IIT Bombay known as Techfest was started in 1998, held in December every year and is Asia's largest Science and Tech festival. Faculty members from IIT Bombay are involved into industry sponsored research and consultancy projects funded by various national agencies like the Aeronautical Development Agency, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Atomic Energy, Department of Electronics, Department of Space, and Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC). The Institute cherishes the hope that its graduates will be the leaders of tomorrow. Therefore,their education is patterned with this in view.
