The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata (abbreviated as IISER Kolkata or IISER-K) is a scientific research and science education of international standards located at Nadia district, West Bengal. IISER Kolkata was established in 2006 and was the first of the IISERs to be established along with IISER Pune. IISER Kolkata is among seven IISERs institutes established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India under the category of institutes of national importance, to promote quality education and research in basic sciences.
IISER Kolkata is an autonomous institution and currently offering a five-year BS-MS programme in addition to integrated Ph.D and Ph.D. programmes in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Earth Sciences inter-disciplinary areas. Apart from IISER Kolkata, there are six other IISERs in India named as IISER Bhopal, IISER TVM, IISER Mohali, IISER Pune, IISER Tirupati and IISER Berhampur.
The basic idea of IISER is to create research Universities of the highest calibre in which teaching and education will be totally integrated with the state of the art research. These Universities are devoted to Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching in sciences in an intellectually vibrant atmosphere of research. One of the important objectives of creating these Universities is to make education and careers in basic sciences more attractive by providing opportunities in integrative teaching and learning of sciences and break the barriers of traditional disciplines.
