Hidayatullah National Law University (abbreviated as HNLU) is an autonomous residential university and is sixth in the series of National Law Schools in India. The University is named after the former Chief Justice of India, Justice Mohammad Hidayatullah. It is one of the National Law Schools established in India being sixth in the series of such national law schools. It was established in 2003 as a center for legal excellence by the Government of Chhattisgarh under the Hidayatullah National University of Law, Chhattisgarh, Act (Act No.10 of 2003).
The motto of the University is “Dharma Sansthapanartham” which means in English “For the sake of establishing the primacy of the laws of eternal value”.
