Dr B.R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology popularly known as NIT Jalandhar was established in 1987. The motto of NIT Jalandhar is "सरस्वती नमस्तुभ्यम्॥" which means "Hail Saraswati".
NIT, Jalandhar (NITJ) is one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology of India. During its foundation it was commonly known as Punjab Regional Engineering college, Jalandhar (PREC).
It was given the status of NIT by the government of India on 17 October 2002. Also, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) declared the institute as "Institute of National Importance" under the act of Parliament -2007. NIT Jalandhar has a campus extending up to 154 acres. "TechNITi" and "UTKANSH" are its technical and cultural fest respectively organised every year. "PRAYAAS" is its student-run club for teaching the poor children. NIT Jalandhar has been ranked as the 42nd best Engineering College of India in the Edu-Rand Rankings of 2015.
