All India Institute of Medical Sciences (abbreviated as AIIMS) was established in 1956 by the Act of Parliament. AIIMS is an autonomous institute to set patterns in Undergraduate and Postgraduate Medical Education in all its branches to demonstrate a high standard of medical education.
All India Institute of Medical Sciences is the only institution outside the jurisdiction of Medical Council of India to encourage experiments in the curriculum. It was originally established as a super specialty tertiary care center with primary emphasis on research and specialized training facilities.
AIIMS Delhi offers undergraduate degree programs in M.B.B.S, B.Sc Nursing (Hons.), B.Sc Nursing Post Basic, B.Sc. (Hons) in Medical Technology in Radiography and Bachelor of Optometry, postgraduate degree programs in MD/MS, Mean Cell Hemoglobin (MCH 6 year), Doctorate of Medicine (DM 6 year), MD Hospital Administration, MDS, M.Sc Nursing, M.Sc Courses and M. Biotech. Apart from undergraduate and postgraduate programs AIIMS also offers super specialty courses in DM and MCH, and Fellowship Doctoral programme in Ph.D.
There are 6 new AIIMS are also created in Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur, Rishikesh and Bhopal on the pattern of AIIMS Delhi in 2012. Recently, in 2018, two more AIIMS also established in Nagpur and Guntur. Apart from these 9 existing AIIMS colleges government is also planning to set up 12 new AIIMS colleges in the country.
