National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (NITR) is a publicly funded premier institute of higher learning for engineering, science and technology. NIT Rourkela was established as Regional Engineering College (REC) Rourkela. It was established on 15 August 1961. First, It’s foundation stone was laid by the Nehru, India’s first prime minister. The institute is located in Rourkela, the steel city of Odisha, India. It is one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology in India and in addition to this the institute has been recognized as an Institute of National Importance.
The institute premises covers the centre of the campus and is surrounded by the residential areas like hostels. The main building of the Institute is in the centre to the institute area and is also surrounded by the departmental buildings. It has all the classrooms, the Central library, and the administrative. It also has departments like Mathematics, Humanities, Physics and Chemistry. The Central Library named Biju Pattanaik, functional from 1965, has been named after Biju Pattanaik, the former chief minister of Odisha. The Institute provides students with worldclass sports facilities which also include a Football –Hockey stadium. Moreover, NIT Rourkela also offers separate swimming facilities for men and women students both.
