UGC Releases List Of Over 35,000 Approved Journals, For The Purpose Of Promotion And Direct Recruitment

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved over 35,000 journals and the research work published in them would be considered for the purpose of promotion and direct recruitment of varsity teachers.

The teaching community and other stakeholders have been demanding a list of notified journals for a long time to set a benchmark for research and allied activities in the field of higher education.

In the letter, he also added that the universities can further recommend the inclusion of additional peer-reviewed journals that are presently not listed in the current list. This can be done through a university-level academic journal expert committee. All universities have been further directed and requested to send in their recommendations latest by 15th May 2017.

Importance of published Journals:

  • The UGC has released the list of the approved journals, and the research work published only in them would be considered for the purpose of Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) and recruitment of teachers and other academic staff, an official said.
  • The direct recruitment of teachers and other academic staff is carried out under the UGC (Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers and other Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges and Measures for the Maintenance of Standards in Higher Education) (4th Amendment), Regulations, 2016.
  • Listed journals are indexed in Web of Science, Scopus and Indian Citation Index.

How to use the list?

  1. The list of journalsis available as a web-based database with search and browse interface on the UGC website. Please visit the website ugc.ac.in/journallist/ for the list.
  2. The list is broadly categorised into three streams — Science, Social Sciences and Arts and Humanities. By default journals from all the list shall be shown.
  3. At first you shall be shown 25 rows you can change the total view to be shown at once using the drop down on the left.
  4. You can even copy the whole list or download a copy in CSV, PDF or XLS from the above mentioned link

Universities can recommend inclusion of additional peer-reviewed journals that are not listed in the existing list through a university-level academic journal expert committee
