UGC Approves Guidelines For 20 World-class Institutions Within The Country With 10 Institutions Each In Public And Private Institutions

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has finally passed the proposed rules and regulations for creating 20 world-class institutions within the country. The decision was taken on 22nd, February 2017,  Wednesday.These institutions shall be called  ‘institutes of eminence’, rather than world class institutes. Though as per media sources, on most of the aspects of Functioning of these institutes shall not be under the purview of UGC regulations. Still the cabinet is yet to approve the proposal.It is expected that government sector institutions may be given financial aid of up to Rs. 1000 crore each.

 

The central government is keen on developing 20 world class institutions, with 10 in public and 10 in private sector. A more simple regulatory framework has been recommended for these institutes as they will get more autonomy in designing syllabi and deciding fee structure.
