As per the reports of Telangana State Council for Higher Education or TSCHE, 50 degree colleges witnessed "ZERO admissions". Apart from this, 150 private degree colleges recorded less than 25% of admissions during DOST (Degree Online Services) Telangana 2017 admission session.

The council has identified that these college has poor enrollment in the past and thus these colleges have two options:

• Progressive Merger.
• Progressive Closure.

Why so happened?

This has happened because there is the high difference in demand and supply. Thier are fewer takers while more colleges which have resulted into such a academic disaster in the state. Similar observation was made by TSCHE in their reports. For the academic year, 2017-18, over 2.25 lakh UG degree seats were filled in 1,110 colleges across the state with over 1.70 lakh seats remaining vacant.

“This has resulted in the mushrooming of colleges and quality going down. With zero or poor admissions, the college managements are facing huge financial burden. Steps are now being taken to improve collegiate education,” a senior TSCHE  official said.

No college can function without meting thier o,perational cost and thus they have no other option other that closure or merger. For proper functioning of the colleges, which includes paying salaries and monthly bills, they need to have at least 50% of students enrolled in UG degree courses and due to the lack of enough admissions, it has become difficult for the colleges.

Meanwhile, the Telangana Government Recognised Degree & PG College Managements Association took objections to the plans of TSCHE to close down 350 colleges. The Association President G Ramana Reddy in a press statement said colleges were providing quality education at an affordable fee besides providing employment to many people
