Government To Offer Complete Autonomy To IITs Soon
After alloting high level of autonomy to Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is expected to get complete autonomy soon. As per reports in dnaindia.com the government is considering giving more autonomy to the premier technical institutes in terms of deciding their fee structure and appointments. Related News: IIMs Now To Award Degrees Instead Of Postgraduate Diplomas To Its Students , Gets Greater Autonomy However, the kind of autonomy that could be granted to the IITs would be different from that granted to the IIMs, considering the varied nature of the institutes i.e. the IIMs are postgraduate institutes while the IITs are largely for undergraduates students. Soon, IIMs will award degrees instead of diplomas. The Union Cabinet approved IIM Bill that has granted it statutory powers. Present Autonomy Situation: The situation has been becoming difficult for both the ministry and the IITs. Therefore, the ministry is in plans to provide complete autonomy to IITs. During a recent IIT council meet, chaired by Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar, demand for autonomy was unanimously supported by the 23 IITs. The minister has personally given a nod to the proposal. Soon, IIMs will award degrees instead of diplomas. The Union Cabinet approved IIM Bill that has granted it statutory powers. The centre is planning to give more autonomy to top performing institutes in India. The government also framed out certain guidelines to grant autonomy to higher educational institutes.
