The Apex court has removed stay on JEE counseling 2017 and ordered counseling authority JOSAA to go ahead with the counselling process.

The supreme court has also asked the high courts not to interfere in any sort of petitions regarding the admission process to IITs to avoid any further confusion and delay in the counselling process.

Previously a petition, filed by IIT aspirant Aishwarya Agarwal and other candidates, had questioned the procedure of awarding “bonus marks” to the candidates who had appeared in the JEE (Advanced) 2017 examination. The court has also asked for an undertaking by IITs and NITs stating that such mistakes would not recur and no situation to award bonus marks would arise in future. Attorney General K.K. Venugopal, who was representing these premier institutes confirmed the same to the court on their behalf.

Around 1.7 lakh students had registered for the JEE-Advanced examination in 2017 and 1.6 lakh appeared for the test. Out of the total, 50,455 students were declared to have qualified and are vying for 11,032 seats across 23 IITs.

On June 30, the apex court had issued notice to the Ministry of Human Resource Development on a plea seeking quashing of the JEE 2017 rank list. India has 23 IITs and 30 NITs, the two best engineering school brands in the country. These two together cater to around 25-30,000 students per year.
