The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are autonomous public institutes of higher education, situated in India. The IITs are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 which has declared them as institutes of national importance. The Union HRD Minister is the ex-officio Chairperson of IIT Council. There are in total 23 IITs in India.

Since all the IITs have proved their excellent academic records with high placements, the NIRF ranking is made to rank these IITs among themselves. All the IITs are provided good academic exposure but few are better than the rest. The ranking reflects the same.
