Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar (which is also known as IIT Bhubaneswar or IIT-BBS) is a public engineering institution which is established by the government of India in 2008, and is located in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. It is amongst the eight new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development(HRD), Government of India under The Institutes of Technology Act 1961 with Amendments upto 2012 which established the eight new IITs as well as declared IT-BHU as Indian Institute of Technology. IIT-BBS came into existence in July 22, 2008, inheriting the name IIT. Initially its functioning started in the campus of IIT Kharagpur on 23 July 2008 and shifted to the city of Bhubaneswar on 22 July 2009.The vision of the institute is “We will be a highly respected Institute in the world for our distinctive knowledge”.
The campus spreads on 936 acres(3.79 km2) of Government land allotted by Government of Odisha for permanent campus of the institute. The Foundation Stone of the permanent campus at Arugul, which is situated on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. The institute near Jatni Railway Station is 25 kilometres from Biju Patnaik Airport Bhubaneswar. The self-contained campus is home for nearly 10,000 students and 1,100 faculty. To support industry oriented research activities, a science park is being set up as a part of this institution. The institute has started operating in its new campus at Arugul from academic year 2015-16. For conducting research in marine ecosystems, rising sea levels, fishery development, disaster management, ecology, and other areas IIT Bhubaneswar is the first IIT to set up a separate marine campus in 2011.
The academic programmes offered by the Institute include B. Tech. (Hons.) in Computer Science, ECE, Electrical, Civil and Mechanical Engineering with an intake capacity of 40 each at the undergraduate level. B. Tech. (Hons.) in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering is offered with the intake capacity of 20. The institute is also about to start the Dual degree courses in Mechanical and civil with intake of 10 from academic year 2016-17. From July 2012,the Doctoral programme started by the institute from the academic session 2009-2010 offers admission to the joint M. Tech-Ph.D. Programme. The institute also offers various courses under School of Basic Sciences, School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Management, School of Mechanical Sciences, School of Electrical Sciences etc.
