Open Book Examination Proposal For Engineering Exams Approved By AICTE, Read Here

Open book examination for engineering courses has been approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) wherein students will be allowed to refer to books in examination halls. This will comes in effect from the next session onwards and hopefully it will be less stressful as it would focus less on the memorizing ability for a student.

Open book examination doesn’t mean all examinations will be conducted as an open book test; there will be some subjects that have to be conducted as open book examination.

“Open book exams will be allowed in designed and systemic manner. It will not be allowed in all the exams” said by chairperson of AICTE committee.

“The way we conduct exams traditionally only assesses students based on their ability to reproduce knowledge. Through these guidelines, we aim to reform the way we assess our students. We are aiming to match the assessment system with the outcome-based framework our education and industry has adopted based on performance indicators” said by chairperson of AICTE committee.

Before the implementation of this open book examination system, AICTE will train teachers from engineering institutes from all across the country that to be starting from next month onwards.

The policy also advises the academicians to “set the question paper in a way that requires students to do things with information available to them, rather than merely locate the correct information from the book”.

“If we have to say 12 indicators for our engineering graduates, half of them do not belong to technical traits. Our traditional system is unable to acssess students based on these soft skills including teamwork, communication skills, et al.” said by chairperson of AICTE committee.

Apart from Open Book Examination

Not only the open book examination but also AICTE has taken another bold decision, which is a mandatory internship for engineering student. BE/B.Tech students have to complete their 600-700 hours of internship and Diploma candidates have to complete 450 to 500 of internship.
