IIT Kharagpur Launches Semester Away Programme For Helping Students Learn Abroad

The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT-Kgp), has launched a ‘Semester Away Programme’ (SAP), which will help its students to opt for a semester or two at any foreign or Indian university before the completion of their course.

“A student will be able to choose an institution in India or abroad and a course offered by them. They will choose the course, take the approval of the faculty and apply. The university does not necessarily have to be one we have an MoU (memorandum of understanding) with. If chosen, the students will be able to go there for one or a maximum of two semesters,” explained P K Das, dean of IIT-Kharagpur’s post-graduate programme.

Eligibility For The Program:

  1. CGPA of 7 or more required:

    • As per reports in Indian Express, third year BTech students and second year MTech students with a CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) of seven or above will only be allowed to apply for the SAP. Students must have no academic backlog at the time of applying for the program.
  2. Students to make a choice:

    • Students are expected to make choice course and take approval from faculty before they apply for SAP.

"Studying in the top universities across the globe will add to their CV. The national/international exposure to the top institutes will make them more employable," added professor Das.

The fees incurred for the program has to be taken by students himself but if the IIT-Kgp has MoU with the host university or students have grabbed a scholarship then tuition fee and hostel charge can be reduced to some extent.
