Technical Institutions Merger Not Possible, Says MHRD

MHRD said, the colleges that do not have sufficient students, less than 30%, may have to close that engineering branch or may even have to close the college. To this notice, colleges asked AICTE to merge such institutes, institutes that are geographically close to each other. In doing so, the colleges can share resources, infrastructure and also the financial stability, of the colleges, will be maintained.

AICTE agreed to the idea, that colleges that are geographically close to each other, may go for the merger but MHRD did not agree to this. Mr. Satya Pal Singh, Minister of HRD (State), on January 4, said that government is not planning for any such merger of technical institutes even if they are in close proximity to each other.

Instead, the institutes may opt for the closure of such engineering courses which are not having sufficient students or even the colleges can be shut down. He also clarified that AICTE has also agreed to the idea of not merging the colleges. Moreover it, AICTE is also not granting approvals to new colleges in the states where the colleges cannot fulfill the available seats in present colleges.
