New Syllabus For MBBS Aspirants From August 2019, Read Here
Medical Council of India (MCI) has ordered to introduce the new syllabus for MBBS from the August 2019. The new curriculum will be implemented from August 2019, i.e. MBBS batch admitted in first year. Previously admitted batches and studying currently in MBBS shall continue with existing Curriculum. “The syllabus isn’t wholesome and inclusive,” said Dr. Satendra Singh, disability activist and medical doctor at the University College of Medical Sciences and Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, Delhi. There are core group of 40,000 medical teachers who are previously trained by the MCI are ensuring the “last group” training for teachers in individual colleges. Some teachers are not happy with the updated syllabus and they are pointing to several critical omissions for this decision. MCI has also rolled out plan of competency based UG Curriculum which is given below: S.No Milestone Dates of Workshop Location of workshop 1. CISP workshops to train medical college faculty supervised by Observer from respective Nodal & Regional Centres May 2019 (or even earlier as per schedule fixed by medical colleges in consultation with corresponding Nodal or Regional centres) –a continuing process until all college faculty are trained Medical colleges 6. Completion of skill labs and other requisite infrastructure March 2019to December 2019 Dean of institution “Teachers also have to be alert to the annual revision, which will include changing laws, new diseases, discoveries and updated research information,” said Dr. Avinash N. Supe, member of the expert group of the MCI’s academic cell. As per the appointed faculties, some of them have noted that few important topics have been left out from the old curriculum such as disability competencies for health professionals, importance of empathetic non-verbal communication etc. “Disability competencies for health professionals are missing from the document. The importance of empathetic non-verbal communication and unique medical problems associated with patients with disabilities has to be part of the new syllabus. Despite our submissions, after extensive consultation with stakeholders, we are taken aback by the fact that there is no mention of it in the actual document,” said Dr. Satendra Singh, disability activist and medical doctor at the University College of Medical Sciences and Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, Delhi.
