The National Institute of Technology, Patna (abbreviated as NIT Patna), earlier known as Bihar School of Engineering and then Bihar College of Engineering, is a public engineering institution located in Patna, the capital of Bihar, India. On January 28, 2004 , Government of India renamed the institute as NIT Patna and it became 18th National Institute of Technology after renaming the Bihar College of Engineering, Patna. The institute functions directly under Ministry of Human Resource Development(MHRD) of Government of India as an autonomous institute.
The official motto of the institute is “Excellence in scientific and technical education”. The National Institute of Technology, Patna is situated behind Gandhi Ghat, on the South bank of river Ganges, which is one of the most important and sacred places of Patna . The Institute campus is at a distance of 8 Km from the Patna junction railway station and at a distance of 20 Km from the Jai Prakash Narayan International Airport, Patna . Ashok Rajpath has the main entrance to the institute which is about 3Km from the famous Gandhi Maidan. The campus of the Institute is residential thus providing the residential facilities to the students and teachers of the institute.
The institute works with the mission “To contribute to India and the World through excellence in scientific and technical education and research; to serve as a valuable resource for industry and society, and to remain a source of pride for all Indians.”The various departments of the institute are Department of Architecture, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering, Department of Information Technology, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Department of Electrical Engineering.
Edu-Rand Rankings of 2015 ranked NIT Patna as the 57th best Engineering College of India . While in April 2016, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) , published NIT Patna on 87th position in National Institutional Ranking Framework. The institute has personalities such as Mr.Nitish Kumar, Chief Minister of Bihar, Mr. Ratan Kumar Sinha, Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission of India (AEC) and Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and Mr. Chandeshwar Dayal (retired), who worked as Chief Engineer in Water Resources Department, Bihar.
