The National Institute of Technology Durgapur is also known as NIT Durgapur or NITD, is a Central Government engineering college located in Durgapur, West Bengal, India. It is among the first 8 Regional Engineering Colleges established in India and was founded in 1960 by the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. Today it is one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology in India and has been recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007. The institute is ranked 30 in the 2016 engineering university rankings according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).
The motto of NIT Durgapur is उद्योगः पुरूषस्य लक्षणम् which means Work Maketh a Man. In 2010, NIT-Durgapur celebrated its Golden Jubilee (completing 50 years). The admissions in the undergraduate course (B.Tech) are done through the JEE MAINS examination while in the postgraduate course (M.Tech) through the GATE examinations conducted by the IITs and IISc, Common Admission Test (CAT) for MBA and National Institute of Technology MCA Common Entrance Test (NIMCET) for MCA.
National Institute of Technology, Durgapur is a residential Institute. There are nine hostels for boys and three hostels for girls to accommodate about 5000 Boys and 2500 Girls students. NIT Durgapur also focuses on the technical and cultural growth of the scholars by organizing fests. RECSTACY, popularly known as RECS, is the college’s annual social and cultural festival while AROHAN is the Annual National Techno-Management festival organized by the National Institute of Technology, Durgapur.
