The Indian Institute of Technology Patna (which is also known as IIT Patna or IITP) is an autonomous institute of education and research in engineering, science, and technology located in Patna, India. The Government of India has also recognized the institute as an Institute of National Importance. The Government of India.IIT Patna is also a part of National Knowledge Network (NKN), providing a high-speed core networking for all the knowledge related institutions in India integrating seamlessly all of the scientific community of India.
Kapil Sibal laid the foundation stone of the IIT Patna, Bihar Campus in 2011. The campus is located at Amhara, Bihta, which is 35 km from Patna on 501 acres. The honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the campus at Bihta on 25 July 2015. Earlier, the institute was operated from a temporary campus in a 10 acres complex in Pataliputra colony, Patna, in buildings which were previously used by the Naveen Government Polytechnic and have been renovated for the temporary campus. Computer Science and Electrical Engineering block have instructional laboratories for Digital Signal Processing, Digital Electronics, Analog Electronics, Power Systems, Embedded Systems, VLSI, Basic Electronics, Electrical Machines and Power Electronics which are fully operational. The Tutorial Block/Academic block classes are equipped with modern audio-visual electronic gadgets.
The science block has the classrooms, faculty rooms and laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics including the optics research and material science research facilities of the chemistry instruments and chemistry research facilities of the Chemistry Department, the computational research facility of the Mathematics Department and the Physics Department, Mechanical Engineering block comprises of Laboratories, including Basic and Conventional Manufacturing Lab, Heat and Mass Transfer Lab, CAD/CAM Lab, Dynamics Lab, Fluid Mechanics Lab, Advanced Manufacturing Lab, Instruments and Control Lab, IC Engines Lab, Material Testing Lab, etc. The building of Software Technology Park of India (STPI) has a conference room, a placement cell and faculty chambers. It also includes computer hardware laboratory of the Computer Science Department. On 25 July 2015,the foundation stone for an incubation centre for medical electronics was laid at IIT-Patna to promote interdisciplinary research in a field of medical devices.
The motto of IIT Patna is “विद्यार्थी लभते विद्याम”(in Sanskrit) which means “One who aspires wisdom, attains it”. The highest package offered till date is Rs.1.8 crores (US$270,000), by Google and in 2013, students secured an average annual package of Rs 6.5 lakh.
