The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (also known as IIT Madras) is a public engineering and research institute located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and is amongst the most prestigious universities in India. The German Government, in 1956,offered technical assistance for the establishment of a higher education in engineering institute in India. The first Indo-German agreement in Bonn, West Germany for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras was signed in 1959. Prof. Humayun Kabir, Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs formally inaugurated the institute in 1959.
IIT Madras is a residential institute, occupying a 2.5 km² campus that was formerly part of the adjoining Guindy National Park. The institute has around 550 faculties, 8,000 students and 1,250 administrative and supporting staff, establishing itself as a premier centre for teaching, industrial consultancy and research in the country. Admission to the B.Tech and Dual Degree (B.Tech plus M.Tech) programme is through the Joint Entrance Examination - Advanced (JEE-Advanced) ,while admission to the five-year integrated Master of Arts (MA) programme is through the Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE),which is a specific IIT Madras exam. Through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE),admission to the M.Tech and MS programmes are taken. For the two-year M.Sc. programme and another post-BSc program, the Joint Admission Test to MSc(JAM) is the entrance exam. MBA admissions are accepted through the Common Admission Test (CAT).
The Motto of IIT Madras says "सिद्धिर्भवति कर्मजा" which means "Effort Yields Success". The institute has advanced research centres, sixteen departments across the disciplines of engineering and the pure sciences, and nearly 100 laboratories. Faculties of international repute, excellent technical & supporting staff, a brilliant student community, and an effective administration, all have been a contributing factor to the pre-eminent status of IIT Madras.
