The Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur (which is also known as IIT Jodhpur or IITJ), is a public university located in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India. It is one of the eight new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), the government of India under The Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2012 which declares these eight IITs and also converts the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University into IIT.
The Central Government announced IIT Jodhpur in July 2007, the formal announcement although came in 2008, with IIT Kanpur taking up the mentorship of IIT Jodhpur. The first academic session of IIT Jodhpur began at the IIT Kanpur campus in July 2008, having109 undergraduate students in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. Initially, the institute was sanctioned as an IIT for whole Rajasthan, but not Jodhpur in specific. After considering various cities, including Kota, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Ajmer, Jaipur, and Udaipur, the Prof. Vijay Shankar Vyas led the committee which suggested Jodhpur as the location for the IIT in Rajasthan. In late 2009, the Ministry of Human Resource Development granted final approval for the establishment the institute finally at Jodhpur.
The motto of the institute is “त्वं ज्ञानमयो विज्ञानमयो असि” (in Sanskrit) which means “You are the entire knowledge and science”. The permanent campus of IIT Jodhpur covers an area of 900 acres (3.6 km2) of land around Jhiasmi and Gharao villages. In late 2010, the construction of the fully residential campus of IIT Jodhpur was started. The Department of Computer Science, MBM Engineering College, functions as a transit campus of IIT Jodhpur until the construction of the permanent campus is completed, The transit campus is separate from the main campus of MBM Engineering College. The transit academic campus comprises of 20 labs, with six 50-person capacity classrooms and four 200-person capacity classrooms. Two of the four large classrooms have networking and video conferencing facility to facilitate remote lectures.
